When I write, I try to visit many of the locations that I describe and become familiar with the weapons, the spycraft, and the plot lines that I write about. As the old adage goes, writers need to write about what they know. I try to get all the facts right.
But sometimes facts are stranger than fiction. Like the following story:
In a secret operation in 2017, the US extracted its highest-level covert operative from Russia. He was embedded deep inside the Russian government, but his cover was blown during a meeting between top US and Russian officials.
The covert operative had spied for the US for more than a decade. He had been able to photograph documents on Putin’s desk since he was Putin’s most senior foreign affairs adviser. The Russians named the spy as former presidential administration official Oleg Smolenkov. Some sources say that the spy was honey-trapped by his wife to spy for the CIA.
Initially, the Russian mole refused extraction, citing concerns about his family. Then Smolenkov went on holiday with his family to Montenegro in 2017 and then disappeared. It’s not clear how he disappeared, but we can assume that people of the caliber of Jack Storm, the extractor, were involved in ensuring the successful extraction of this spy.
