1. Do the Saudis Really Hunt Down Their Dissidents?
Yes, they really do that. The Saudis have taken a page from the Russian secret services in going after dissidents and critics of the Saudi regime. The most famous case is that of the well-known journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed in October 2018 in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. In other, less-known cases, Saudi operatives have lured opposition figures from Canada back to the kingdom with promises of money and safety. When that doesn’t work, Saudi operatives have infiltrated Canada to harass and intimidate Saudi citizens living in Canada because they criticized the Saudi royals. And when those attempts fail, the Saudi regime sends a hit squad. In 2018, a hit squad, codenamed Tiger Squad, was sent to Canada to hunt down and kill a former top intelligence official who knew too much. They were stopped at the border…

2. Hobnobbing with Billionaires…
Well, not exactly, but as close enough as I’ll get to that… When my wife and I were visiting St. Barts in the Caribbean for “research” purposes :-), we ran into one of the richest men in the world, and once the richest man in Russia.
We were just walking along Rue Jeanne d’Arc when Mr. Roman Abramovich came from the other direction. He was dressed in a blue t-shirt and grayish-blue pants and had just one bodyguard next to him, who didn’t really look like a bodyguard, so maybe he was a friend. Another man was walking about six steps behind, and he definitely had the very alert bodyguard look. He was also dressed in a jacket, a bit overkill for the hot weather, but you know what jackets are good for, right?
Yes, maybe not very exciting, but it illustrated the fact often portrayed in my books that Russian billionaires do not always go out with an army of bodyguards armed to their teeth. Having said that, we also saw Mr. Abramovich’s yacht anchored in St. Barts, named Eclipse. It costs over 1 billion US dollars and has its own missile defence system. Probably more than St. Bart’s coast guard defences combined… We also saw Mr. Abramovich’s personal airplane in Saint Martin’s airport, since St. Bart’s airport is too small for that monster of a plane.
