Today marks 10 years since rebels in Libya rose up against their dictator, Muammar al-Qaddafi, and his brutal regime. Things might not be any better for the Libyan people, but the events in that country inspired the second book in my bestselling Justin Hall spy thriller series, Tripoli’s Target.
I began to work on Tripoli’s Target before the Arab Spring in early 2011 toppled dictators throughout northern Africa. At that time, this area of the world had received little attention in spy thrillers, which focused mostly on Afghanistan, Iraq, or Iran. The “mad dog of the Middle East,” Muammar Qaddafi, was still alive and on very good terms with the United States.
The US Secretary of State Rice visited Tripoli and met with Qaddafi in 2008. I imagined someone in the terrorist networks may not like this coziness and may try to derail their improved relations, so the writing began. Then in 2011, I had to change several plots in the book, to make it fit the new reality when Qaddafi was dethroned and then killed during the Civil War ravaging the country. I kept reading in the news about rebels fighting with Muammar Qaddafi’s army and wondered how this would impact the region … and the story.
So how did I make all the real events fit in Tripoli’s Target?
